Healthy Ageing
FAID promotes healthy and active ageing for all. Realizing the importance of Healthy Ageing, the United Nations General Assembly on December 14, 2020, decided to proclaim 2021-2030 the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing. Our programmes on healthy ageing include:
01
Care of Carers
FAID supports caregivers of older people by improving their access to knowledge, skills and equipment related to caregiving. Furthermore, we share information and raise awareness of older people about healthy and active ageing.
02
Eye Care
Cataract is the most common eye disease leading to blindness in old age in Pakistan. Incidence of cataract is 14.7% in age group 50- 59, while 42% in age group 60-69% and 87.7% in age group 79 and above. Old age cataract generally occurs in people above 50 years of age. There is no medical treatment for it; the only solution is surgery. However, in Pakistan a large majority of older people are either not aware of the surgery procedure or cannot afford this surgery hence live with visual disability. We support older people with cataract surgeries so that they can restore their vision and be able to do their activities of daily living independently.
03
Disability Rehabilitation
It is estimated that every second older person in this world is living with some disability leading to compromised health, functionality, happiness, independence and dignity in older age. Assistive technology and simple assistive devices help older people regain functionality and live an independent life with dignity. However, not all older people can access simple devices such as a walking frame, or a wheelchair.
We work with older people and other stakeholders to empower older people with disabilities by providing them simple assistive technology such as wheelchairs, walking frames, crutches, walking sticks etc. We also support older people with physiotherapy to help regain lost musculoskeletal strength.
