Bridging Human Rights: Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities and Older People

On December 5, 2024, Lahore, Pakistan, became the hub for an inspiring seminar, “Bridging Human Rights: Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and Older People,” organized by Buzurg Dost Network (BDN) Punjab, Foundation for Ageing and Inclusive Development (FAID), HelpAge International, and the Rural Community Development Society (RCDS).

This seminar was held to honor the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) and International Human Rights Day, focusing on the intersection of ageing and disability rights in Pakistan.

Event Objectives

The seminar aimed to:

  • Advocate for ageing and inclusive development.
  • Amplify the voices of persons with disabilities and older people.
  • Address critical gaps in equitable access to services and rights.

Keynote Highlights

  • Amna Aftab, CEO of Hum Mashal e Rah Foundation, highlighted the urgent need for robust legislation for older people in Punjab and proposed key policy recommendations.
  • Muhammad Yousuf, Deputy Director of the Human Rights and Minority Affairs Department, discussed progress under the Punjab Human Rights Policy 2018 and emphasized efforts to protect PWDs and older citizens.

Panel Discussion

A thought-provoking panel discussion, “Strengthening Collaboration for Inclusive Development,” brought together:

  • Dr. Syed Imran Murtaza, expert on ageing and human rights.
  • Sheikh Pervaiz, civil society representative.
  • Muhammad Iqbal, disability rights advocate.

Moderated by Shahzado Khaskheli, the panel underscored the importance of collective action for an inclusive society.

Special Guests

The seminar was graced by:

  • Falbous Christopher, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Minority Affairs.
  • Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora, Minister for Human Rights and Minority Affairs, Punjab, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering vulnerable groups.

This seminar reinforced the urgent need for inclusive policies and strengthened collaborations to ensure equal opportunities for PWDs and older people. Together, we can create a society where no one is left behind.
